Furniture check-up and refinish

A favorite table showing wear, a dresser that lost its shine. Check-ups start with a thorough inspection, then expert repair of cracks, scratches, and loose joints, then refinishing from spot repairs to a brand new protective coat. Hardwood pieces from other makers are welcome too.

The maker

A scenic carpenter who became a furniture maker.

Michael Ortolano began his woodworking journey in Albany, New York, as a scenic carpenter. In 2002 he packed a truck and came west to Oregon, honing his skills at Portland Center Stage and later at a local fine furniture shop, surrounded by veteran furniture makers for well over a decade.

When the pandemic closed the shop, he started crafting dovetail boxes from his single-car garage. In July 2020, with a ragtag assortment of machines and a heart full of determination, he officially launched PDX Woodworks.

Today the shop runs 1,500 square feet with an attached showroom on SE Stark Street, building tables and more with the same unshakable commitment to quality.

What people are saying

Five stars, in their own words.

We had an amazing custom bench made for our dining area and we could not be happier! Beautiful, quality wood and very clean and durable craftsmanship. Michael was great to work with, very patient with the 100 questions we had before we approved the final design, and it was wonderful working with someone who could take an idea you had in your head and make it better.

Michael designed and built our gorgeous, cherry wood, dining room table. With inlaid walnut at the corners, the workmanship is flawless and the finish is beautiful. At 110″ the table easily accommodates 12 for family holiday celebrations. Two 22″ leafs can be removed allowing the table to collapse to 66″. Structurally the table is very sturdy. My wife and I are very proud of our dining table from PDX Woodworks. We love it.

Michael is so knowledgable, an absolute master of his craft, and a delight to work with. I had long wanted a large live edge serving board and what I received far exceeded my expectations.
